The Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League are one of the few major pro sports teams that still have a Native name. The team says the name honors Black Hawk, a famous chief in the Sac and Fox Nation of Illinois who died in 1838.
But journalist Vincent Schilling says the name and the cartoonish logo (right) send the wrong message about Native people to fans.
“The team has a huge responsibility to tell an accurate story, but what they are doing is careless,” Schilling says.
- Many sports fans think of this FACE PAINT as war paint, which promotes a harmful stereotype of Native people. In fact, face paint often represents family groups or honors leaders.
- FEATHERS are sacred to many Native nations, so showing them on a team logo or uniform is seen as a sign of disrespect.
